"When I read the story of Jesus and imagined the scene of an innocent man being persecuted and tortured, I cried to no end. That lead me to order 5 books on public executions and martyrs. The past and present are filled with individuals who have gazed out upon a crowd of people gathered to witness death. One of the most powerful moments I can imagine would be hundreds or thousands of people in one place projecting hate, anger, fear, and sadness, at someone set to meet death at the hands of an executioner. I wonder if I would beg for my life. Maybe I would curse the crowd and spit at humanity. Would I pray in silence as tears rolled down my cheeks? For years these scenes simmered in my mind. So, I decided to take the sadness and anger and pound it onto a canvas. I only hope this painting evokes empathy while we remember those who were victim to the public consumption of death."
